What's unique about the brand

Kudos Audio is a British loudspeaker maker based in County Durham, whose designers draw on decades of experience in live sound. The company works by listening and observation instead of by-the-numbers design, using custom drivers and low-order crossovers. Titan models use an isobaric bass reflex layout, and the larger Titan floorstander uses bespoke SEAS drive units. Titan and Super Cardea speakers are built so the internal crossover can be bypassed. That lets an owner move to active operation later, with the company's own external crossover and almost any brand of amplifier.

Brand overview

Derek Gilligan learned to judge loudspeakers in concert halls. For years he ran live sound with his brother Trevor in North East England, and on INXS's first UK tour his job was to judge how the room sounded and relay it to Trevor at the front-of-house desk. He noticed that a PA adjusted to measure perfectly "never sounded quite right." Kudos speakers are voiced the same way, by ear, and kept simple, with custom SEAS drivers and as few parts as possible between the amplifier and the drivers. The Titan models add a bass trick called isobaric loading. Two identical woofers are mounted back to back with a sealed chamber between them, and Kudos says this gives the bass of a cabinet twice the size. Steve Dickinson of Hi-Fi+ says Kudos has always appealed to him for its "sense of ease, and natural tonal colour," and for steadiness and honesty rather than fireworks. Kudos suits listeners who want acoustic instruments to sound full-bodied and real.

The Titan 505 is the way in. It is the only standmount among the four Titans, and Alan Sircom of Hi-Fi+ calls it "the ideal model for the listener in smaller rooms." He heard "where did you hide the subwoofer" power from it. Jason Kennedy of The Ear found that the 505 soaks up power and opens up when played louder than average, and he preferred the bass with a powerful ATC P2 power amp. Placement is easier than with most speakers, because the Titans' ports fire into a fixed gap at the base, so they tolerate nearby walls, and Dickinson ran Titan 808s barely a foot from his bay window. Kudos usually advises against toeing them in, because the tweeter is designed to be heard off axis, and Kennedy got the best balance from the 505 toed out a little, which he later learned is how Kudos recommends setting them up. When you want to upgrade, links on the back let you bypass the internal crossover and drive the speakers actively, including with Kudos's own SIGAO DRIVE.

Gilligan's first speaker was made for a shop. In January 1989 he joined North East Audio Traders, a dealer in second-hand hifi that later became Neat Acoustics. The shop never had enough small black speakers to sell, so he was asked to make one, with cabinets from his brother's and father's business, and the result was the Neat Petite. He started Kudos in 2006 with the C10 standmount, using a name that had previously belonged to a stand maker. The C20 floorstander of 2007 introduced the fixed boundary port gap, and Kudos says Hi-Fi News gave it an Outstanding Product award. The Super Cardea models of 2012 added the option to bypass the crossover for active drive. The split-cabinet T88 of 2013 was refined into the Titan 808 in 2017, and Gilligan calls the Titan Series "my finest achievement to date." The 707, 606 and 505 followed with the same isobaric bass in smaller boxes. Chris Kelly of The Ear called the Super 10A "proudly conceived and built in the North East," and Kudos is still based in Willington, County Durham.
