What's unique about the brand

ACCUSTIC ARTS is a German maker of amplifiers and other hifi components that builds its components by hand. Its products go through a two-week testing process, and the company uses thick aluminum plates and gold-plated contacts. The company's tube hybrid preamplifiers pair transistor circuits with a tube buffer stage, aimed at a natural midrange. Listeners who want some tube character in an otherwise solid-state system can start with one of those preamplifiers, and its models include the Power II, Power III and Player III.

Brand overview

Rafael Todes of Hi-Fi+ likes to test a capable power amplifier on a pair of Quad 63 electrostatic speakers, because they are notoriously hard to drive. With an Accustic Arts AMP IV in charge, the double bass on an Oscar Peterson Trio record came through so firmly that the Quads sounded "better than I’ve heard them before." Some speakers ask an amplifier for a surge of current on certain notes, and the German company's answer is simple. It builds its amplifiers with oversized parts, big transformers and output transistors that the company says never work near their limits. Gary Lea of Positive Feedback heard no "strident highs" from the Amp II and no "fuzzy bloating masquerading as warmth." Terry London of Stereo Times heard "an overall silky smoothness and effortless liquidity" from the Power III, even at high volume. Accustic Arts suits owners of demanding speakers who want solid-state power without a clinical sound.

The Power III integrated is a sensible place to start. It is the most powerful integrated in the Top series, it has a DAC built in, and a phono board can be added later when you want to play records. If you want to build up separates, the Tube Preamp V is a good partner for a transistor power amp. Todes finds tubes in more than one part of a system "too rich and gooey," so he likes having this one tube stage ahead of solid-state power, and the tubes can be switched off when you aren't listening to save them. The step up is the Reference series, whose big amplifiers have a damping control that changes how tightly they hold the woofers. Todes heard more bass grip with it on, and Jason Victor Serinus of Stereophile preferred it off with his Wilsons, so try both settings in your own room before deciding.

Accustic Arts builds its electronics in Lauffen am Neckar, near Stuttgart. The brand was introduced in 1997 after five years of development, with roots in recording studios and PA systems. Its building, put up in 1998, holds a recording studio next to the production line and test center, and the company says a single product's testing can last up to two weeks. In 2009 it launched a record label, Accustic Arts Audiophile Recordings, and sound engineer Milan Sajé produced its five Uncompressed World albums. Dirk Sommer of HiFi Statement remembers the 18-kilogram Drive II transport and the Tube DAC II, whose 32-bit processing and tubed output section were unusual at the time. The AMP VI followed with a redesigned power supply. In Stereophile, Serinus called its predecessor, the AMP V, "one of the finest and most musically satisfying amplifiers to ever enter my system."

Products overview

Every model is built by hand in Germany with thick aluminum plates and gold-plated contacts. The Power III is an integrated amp with a built-in digital converter, so a computer connects straight to it. The Amp IV is a power amp with 400 watts at 8 ohms, which drives harder speakers. The Mono VI reaches 950 watts at 8 ohms, which plays loud in a large room with ease. Preamps and CD players come as separate lines, such as the Preamp V and Player IV.

  • Start here. Choose the Power III if you want one box that drives your speakers, takes a computer, and feeds headphones, with 230 watts per channel at 8 ohms.
  • Sweet spot. The Amp IV suits a buyer with demanding speakers, since it holds a 2 ohm load and has 160,000 µF of filter capacity, while the Amp VI and Mono models mostly add more power.
  • All in. The Mono VI is a far costlier step up from the Mono IV, an update of that model, and its 950 watts at 8 ohms against 510 gives large speakers more headroom at high volume, so loud peaks stay controlled.

About the brand

Burmester is a German high-end audio maker that has hand-built its products in Berlin since 1977. Its components carry a chrome industrial look and a high degree of adjustability, with settings such as gain and loading that let an owner fit a unit to the rest of the system. Reviewers describe the house sound as refined, with powerful, controlled bass and a large-scale soundstage. The BX100 speaker uses an Air-Motion-Transformer tweeter, and the BC350 offers Pure and Live tuning modes. The 175 turntable is on our Most Expensive Turntables list.

About the brand

Audio Phonique is a Polish maker of tube and solid-state electronics and cables, founded in 2018. It keeps its circuits as simple as possible and hand-builds everything at its own factory in Poland. The Statement Line uses directly heated triode tubes, with Emission Labs 1605 tubes running in parallel in the PSE1605 monoblocks. The solid-state Classic Line is voiced to keep some tube character, and its P1 line stage is built to work with a wide range of power amplifiers. The cables use monocrystalline silver and copper conductors in a design called Extended Air Geometry.

About the brand

Thrax is a Bulgarian maker of amplifiers and preamplifiers, founded by Rumen Artarski. A small team designs and builds everything in its Sofia workshop, winding every transformer in-house and machining every chassis from solid aluminum. Many of the designs combine tube and solid-state stages. The Dionysos preamplifier sets volume with transformers rather than potentiometers, and the Spartacus 300 monoblocks use directly heated triodes in push-pull, in pure class A with no feedback. The Enyo MK2 puts a preamplifier, DAC and power amplifier in one chassis, so a complete system needs fewer boxes.

About the brand

Gryphon is a Danish high-end audio maker founded in 1985 by Flemming E. Rasmussen. Rasmussen trained as a painter, which shows in the finish of every product. Its amplifiers are heavily biased toward Class A, and most use zero negative feedback. Gryphon says it introduced the first true dual mono configuration, and it leaves out tone and balance controls. Every unit is built in Denmark and gets a 48-hour burn-in before a final listening test. The Diablo 333 integrated takes optional phono and DAC modules, so owners can add a turntable or digital sources later.
