What's unique about the brand
Acoustic Signature is a German turntable maker, founded in 1996. Founder Gunther Frohnhoefer presented its first high-mass turntable a year later, and the catalog now also covers tonearms, cartridges, phono preamplifiers and motor electronics. The company developed its own constrained-layer damping to reduce chassis resonance, the maintenance-free DuraTurn Diamond bearing and AVC Automatic Vibration Control for the motor. Every part is CNC-machined at its factory in Suessen and assembled by hand. The current models belong to the NEO series, and the company gives an extended warranty of 15 years on turntables and five on tonearms.
Brand overview
Jonathan Valin of The Absolute Sound wrote of the Acoustic Signature Invictus that "you simply couldn't make the Invictus feed back vibration, even by pounding on it with both fists while it was playing a record." Gunther Frohnhöfer grew up around sprung turntables like the Thorens, and he told Hi-Fi News their sound changed with volume and placement, and that "if you touch it everything moves." So he built the opposite, a heavy, rigid turntable with no springs at all. An aluminum platter on its own can ring like a bell, so Acoustic Signature presses small brass plugs it calls Silencers into each platter, cushioned in rubber that soaks up the ringing. On Michael Fremer's factory tour, a bare platter rang when tapped with a fingernail and a Silencer platter stayed quiet. Michael Trei of Stereophile contrasts this heavy design with Rega's light, rigid decks and argues it is "at least equally valid." Acoustic Signature suits listeners who want a quiet background and no springs to adjust.
The NEO range arrived in 2020 and starts with the Maximus NEO. Greg of VirtualHiFi bought a Tornado NEO and paired it with the company's MCX3 moving-coil cartridge, and next to a Pro-Ject X8 with the same cartridge he heard more detail and a wider soundstage from the Tornado. Further up the range the decks add motors, two on the Verona NEO, and Acoustic Signature says its AVC system measures motor vibration as the deck plays and adjusts the motors to cancel it. The Verona NEO also takes two tonearms, and Trei explains that a longer arm tracks the groove with less error while a shorter one flexes less. The arms come with an alignment jig. When you set arm height, keep a hand on the arm as you loosen the collar, since Jeff of Command Performance AV and Trei both note it drops once released. Acoustic Signature gives its turntables a 15-year warranty and its tonearms five years.
Frohnhöfer trained in electronics, and he told Fremer he "hated it from the beginning," finished the course anyway and moved to mechanics. He founded Acoustic Signature in 1996 in Süssen, near Göppingen, where he grew up, and he prefers local suppliers in a region full of automotive firms. When Robert Harley of The Absolute Sound toured the factory in 2016, each turntable was built start to finish by one person. An assembler named Otto, with the company since its founding, was responsible for the Invictus, and every tonearm is tested by playing an entire LP side, which gives the builders music while they work. Valin opened his 2012 report on the Ascona, a 176-pound turntable with 54 Silencers, by guessing most of his readers had never heard of the company. Then he described hearing for the first time that Attila Bozay was seated, with his zither lying flat, when he recorded it. For its 25th anniversary the team redesigned almost the whole catalog as the NEO series, and in 2019 Valin had already called the Invictus Jr. "Gunther Frohnhoefer's masterpiece."
