What's unique about the brand

TRUTHEAR is a Chinese maker of in-ear monitors, founded in 2022. The Shenzhen company based the tuning goals of some models on HRTF characteristics measured with a BK5128 head and torso simulator, and two were tuned in collaboration with Crinacle. Most models have DLP 3D printed cavities, and the range covers single dynamic driver sets, dual dynamic designs and hybrids that mix a dynamic driver with balanced armatures. The Nova pairs one dynamic driver with four balanced armatures in a three-way crossover, and it is on our Best IEMs list.

Brand overview

When Amir, the founder of Audio Science Review, measured the Truthear x Crinacle Zero in September 2022, he wrote that he was not prepared for how closely it matched the sound he was looking for. He told readers to stop reading and "Go and buy one of these!" He called it "the tuning fork that a musician uses," a reference for how correct tonality should sound. That is Truthear's whole idea. Each model is tuned toward a target curve, a published recipe for how much bass, midrange and treble most listeners prefer. Crinacle, the reviewer who consulted on the Zero, says the target behind the Nova is the tuning that statistically the most people would like. Truthear backs that up with careful building, and its shells are made with a precise 3D printing method the company says is usually reserved for high-end earphones. Truthear suits listeners who want an accurate, measured sound on a modest budget.

The Zero is still the obvious first pick, and the newer Zero:RED comes with an adapter that adds a little more bass. If you want more detail, David Becker of Prime Audio recommends the Hexa, and he hears "a nice blend of warmth and neutrality" with "top-notch" isolation from its small shells. The Nova is the step up, and Crinacle says it hits its target "probably better than any IEM out there in the world today." Whatever you buy, try more than one set of ear tips. McCullough Audio moved the Nova to wide-bore tips such as the Spinfit Omni and heard the treble smooth out and the bass come back, and Kurt of Headfonics got a deep fit and more bass from the included double-flange tips. Watch what you plug them into. Amir warns against using the Zero:BLUE2 with the headphone jacks on many receivers and computers, which can shift its sound. On the tightest budget, Amir measured the single-driver Gate as "basically distortionless."

Truthear started in 2022, and its first product was the Zero, tuned with Crinacle as a consultant. By November 2022 it had a follow-up, the Hexa, Truthear's first hybrid. Its early measurements looked so much like Moondrop's Blessing 2 that, Jin Soh reports, many hailed it as a "budget Blessing." The Hola, a single-driver set, joined it at the entry level, and Crinacle counts it among a trio of inexpensive sets that changed what listeners expect from a starter IEM. In 2023 came the Zero:RED, Crinacle's second Zero, and Griffin Silver of headphones.com wrote "Crinacle has yet again raised the bar." He added, "I'm genuinely not sure I've heard smoother treble in an IEM." Crinacle reckoned Truthear was "4 for 4" by the time the Nova arrived late that year as the brand's most expensive model. The Gate followed in 2025, and Amir closed his review of it with "For once, the name of the company matches what it delivers!" Truthear now also makes planar and dynamic headphones, wireless earbuds and the SHIO USB DAC dongle.

Products overview

Most TRUTHEAR models use DLP 3D printed cavities, which give a light and stable fit for long listening. HOLA starts with one 11mm dynamic driver. Crinacle Zero: Red adds a 7.8mm dynamic for mids and treble, so the 10mm driver can focus on bass. Nova adds four balanced armatures in a three-way crossover, which spreads mids and treble across more drivers and lowers the high frequency resonance peak.

  • Start here. Pick HOLA if you are building a first setup and want one clean driver with low distortion that takes EQ well.
  • Sweet spot. HEXA gives you one dynamic driver plus three balanced armatures in a single hybrid, which the cheaper dual dynamic sets lack, at the same price bracket as PURE.
  • All in. Nova is an extension of the HEXA approach with four armatures and a three-way crossover, priced well above it, giving a warm, clear sound close to the Harman curves.

About the brand

Moondrop made the inexpensive in-ear monitor worth taking seriously. The Chinese company, founded in Chengdu in 2015, tunes to measured targets, the Harman curve or its own in-house target, using its own Klippel laboratory, and sells that tuning at prices that start around $20. The range runs from single dynamic drivers to tribrid designs with planar drivers in one shell, and on to full-size planar headphones such as the Para 2 and Cosmo. Its packaging and artwork often draw on anime.

About the brand

Kinera is a Chinese maker of in-ear monitors, founded by Aaron Yu, and each of its product lines starts from a mythological or artistic theme, often from Norse mythology. Many models have hand-painted faceplates, so no two pairs look quite alike. The IEMs mix dynamic, balanced armature and electrostatic drivers in hybrid layouts, and Kinera develops its own Pulse dynamic drivers. The Imperial Baldr 2.0 combines all three driver types with detachable cables, and the URD is on our Best IEMs list.

About the brand

SIVGA is a headphone maker from Dongguan, China, established in 2016. Its headphones are built around wooden housings, in solid rosewood, black walnut, zebrawood, white maple and green sandalwood, and each wooden part is sanded by hand. Many models pair the wood with a large dynamic driver, and each gets its own tuning. The Robin is a closed-back redwood design, and the SV023 uses walnut cups and a higher-impedance driver suited to a desktop amplifier. The open-back Phoenix is on our Best Open-Back Headphones list.
