What's unique about the brand

Harbeth is one of the original British hifi brands, with roots in the British Broadcasting Corporation. Their speakers are renowned for using specialized materials in their drivers, allowing for vocal reproduction with lifelike accuracy. Harbeth speakers are designed with a focus on human speech, capturing the emotional nuance of voices in a way that few other brands can. While they perform well with instruments, their mastery of vocal clarity and natural sound makes them particularly appealing for listeners who value expressive and authentic voice reproduction.

What reviewers are saying

We read all the reviews. Here's what reviewers feel most strongly about:

  • The brand prioritizes natural, neutral sound reproduction rooted in BBC design principles, updated with proprietary technology like RADIAL2 cone material.
  • Harbeth's cabinets utilize thin-walled construction with specifically damped panels, allowing them to "breathe" and contribute to a warm, involving low end while maintaining a clean midrange.
  • They are designed to be relatively easy to drive, working well with a wide range of amplifiers, including tube and solid-state options, emphasizing quality over high power.
  • Alan Shaw meticulously refines existing designs over long periods, with "XD" versions incorporating small but significant improvements in crossover components and internal wiring for enhanced clarity and integration.

Our favorite reviewer quotes:

  • "These wonderful speakers from Harbeth give you the impression that you are listening to a genuine "live performance" in your room thanks to their extraordinarily "enchanting" and nuanced midrange, a truly deceptive and powerful bass response for the speaker's size, and a clear, emphatic, almost perfect treble response. One can compare the Compact 7 ES3/XD to loudspeakers costing almost 4 times as much money and you will never look back or want for more." (https://www.thesoundadvocate.com/2022/08/harbeth-compact-7es-3-xd-loudspeaker-reviewed)
  • "Singularly pure in tonality, it takes nuances of sound in its midrange that you may never have known were on your sources, (vinyl or digital) and shockingly brings them into the soundscape for the first time! Their BBC heritage takes no prisoners as you first experience its expansive, accurate, and natural sound permeating the front and sides of your listening room." (https://www.thesoundadvocate.com/2022/08/harbeth-compact-7es-3-xd-loudspeaker-reviewed)
  • "Because the P3ESR XD was so exceedingly clean and clear of tone, I could leisurely watch notes decay and feel dampers coming down. What I saw was bright, sharp-focused, and totally Alice in Wonderland." (https://www.stereophile.com/content/gramophone-dreams-86-harbeth-p3esr-xd-loudspeaker-and-nelson-subwooferstand)
  • "With both of the amplifiers I used, ... the Harbeth Super HL5plus sounded conspicuously, even startlingly, clear. The Super HL5plus simply emanated a greater amount of sonic detail and musical information, especially in terms of pitch and timing, than I hear from most speakers, and did so with ease, beauty, and an utter lack of artifice or strain." About the brand

Spendor, a UK-based speaker manufacturer with BBC engineering roots, stands out for its thin-walled cabinet design with controlled damping, which differs from typical rigid cabinet construction. Their speakers, hand-assembled in the UK, feature proprietary technologies like linear-flow and exceptionally flat frequency response, while their Classic series maintains a vintage aesthetic that appeals to traditionalists seeking natural sound reproduction.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

First up: our 5th-generation Linear‑Flow (twin‑Venturi) port used in our D7.2 and D9.2 loudspeakers. Inspired by aerodynamics research, even F1 diffuser tech, it enables controlled airflow with reduced turbulence, giving you bass that’s tight, accurate, and uncoloured - even in smaller rooms or loudspeakers placed close to a wall.

Second: Again, used in our D-Line series, our LPZ tweeter paired with EP77 polymer cones. The LPZ tweeter uses a stainless-steel front plate and precision micro‑foil to create a linear, phase-correct output-imagine the clarity of a finely focused camera lens. That, together with our EP77 polymer mid/bass cones and Kevlar bass units, delivers Spendor’s unmistakeable clarity, neutrality, and musical realism.

What's your approach to customer support?

We encourage customers to reach out to their authorised Spendor retailer or distributor as the first point of contact. They’re well-equipped to help with setup, basic troubleshooting, and warranty queries. Most issues are resolved quickly at that level, and it keeps things local and convenient for the customer.

If there’s a more technical issue that needs our attention, the dealer will liaise directly with us here at Spendor. From our UK facility, we offer practical, honest support, whether that means supplying a replacement part, giving technical guidance, or handling a product return.

What we believe sets us apart is our personal, no-nonsense approach. We're a close-knit team, and that allows us to respond quickly and thoughtfully. If something goes wrong, we aim to make it right with minimal fuss and maximum clarity.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

I love this question! It’s hard to pick three, but here are our standing picks that can really show off what Spendor does best:

  1. “Hotel California” (Live – Eagles): Beautiful layering - acoustic guitar plucks, live room ambience, vocals - it’s a showcase for detail and atmosphere.
  2. “Royals” – Lorde: It’s all about that punchy, disciplined bass and beam‑straight vocals-excellent for revealing rhythm precision and the tweeter’s clarity.
  3. “Take Five” – The Dave Brubeck Quartet: Classic sax lines, brushed cymbals, piano timing-it tests imaging and rhythm on a new level.

What other products pair best with yours?

We design our loudspeakers to be honest and revealing, so we’re proud to say they work well with a wide range of quality electronics. That said, we’re always a little cautious about making specific recommendations. Taste in sound is personal, and what suits one listener may not suit another.

That said, over the years we've found that products from Naim, Cyrus, Exposure, Chord Electronics, and Auralic consistently complement our speakers. They bring out the musicality and natural balance that Spendor is known for, and together they create systems that are expressive, engaging, and a joy to listen to.
