Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Pro-Ject Audio Systems was founded with a passion for analog audio reproduction. Our very first product, introduced in 1991, was a record player – a time when the entire industry was turning its back on vinyl. We didn’t jump on the bandwagon when vinyl became hip – we were instrumental in bringing vinyl back.

We manufacture – not only assemble – 95% of our products in the EU. Raw materials come in – finished products leave the factories. Since we make everything ourselves, we are able offer a 25 year spare part availability!

Today, we offer one of the broadest ranges of high-fidelity products in the world, including turntables, CD players, DACs, streamers, phono preamps, amplifiers, speakers, and a variety of accessories designed to enhance your system and vinyl care.

What's your approach to customer support?

Pro-Ject Audio Systems has a worldwide network of dealers and distributors. We ensure that our team members are highly knowledgeable in the field of high-fidelity audio setup and repairs. In the event of a need for support, the first point of contact is the local dealer. If the dealer cannot handle the problem, the second tier is the distributor in the respective country. By handling as many problems as possible locally, we can ensure the quickest and smoothest resolution.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Aside from one of the audio industry’s widest range of high-fidelity products, Pro-Ject also produces limited runs of high-quality vinyl records. 7Ray’s Jazzy Zoetrope is a double album of fine Jazz standards played by 7Ray and his quartet. One of the two records was recorded live at our headquarters in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria. We produced the whole album in AAA for the highest analog purity. Here’s a link to the records we offer, which double as fine reference recordings across multiple musical genres.

Rega's turntables are light where everyone else's are heavy. The British company, founded in 1973 and still owned by co-founder Roy Gandy, builds stiff, low-mass plinths, makes its own tonearms, and assembles everything by hand in the south east of England. Reviewers hear the result as timing and musical coherence. The Planar 1 Plus has a phono stage built in, so it plugs straight into an amplifier or a pair of powered speakers, and the Planar 3 heads our Best Turntables list.

clearaudio is a German turntable maker, founded in 1978, that makes most of its parts in-house and assembles them by hand in Erlangen. Its patented ceramic magnetic bearing uses an inverted magnetic field to carry the weight of the platter, centered on a diamond-ground ceramic axle. On the Master Innovation, the belt turns a separate lower platter that drives the upper one through magnets alone. Many plinths sandwich Panzerholz, a dense damping wood, with aluminum. The Concept comes with its tonearm and cartridge already mounted and aligned, and it is on our Best Turntables list.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

The design of our turntables in the mid and high range relies on a very unique geometry that’s mathematically defined as the catenary curve, a shape that is found across nature (from spider webs to rope statistics) and firstly described by Galileo Galilei in the 17th century. The curve was first leveraged to design load-bearing structures such as arches and bridges since it offers the best rigidity/mass ratio. For turntables, it's an optimal as it provides really high rigidity with minimal mass giving the turntable great stability and resilience while minimising the amount of mass that could store potential energy (such as vibration). As a side effect, it creates a beautiful shape that elevates the design — this is a very Italian approach, developing creative solutions that serve boh performance and aesthetics.

Another key feature is the electric control of the motor leveraging a built-in power conditioning stage with a triple AC-DC-AC conversion to feed the motor with ultra-clean current, which is crucial as our turntables feature synchronous motors (calibrated on the AC).

Lastly, the design of the bearing/spindle is developed to achieve the strictest of tolerance with higher quality materials, and you won’t find similar designs on any turntables in the same price range since it’s extremely expensive to manufacture — it’s a core feature of our turntables that enables superior sound quality even though it’s completely hidden from the eye.

What's your approach to customer support?

We have a dedicated inbox for customer support [email protected] that is monitored 24/7 and a response time of around 24h. Customer should always contact Gold Note directly, our customer support will then manage their enquiry appropriately and put them in touch with the relevant contacts (such as our local distributor) if needed.

We used to rely primarily on our local partners in the past to provide quick support, however we have recently moved to a more centralised approach since we wish to establish a direct contact with our customers and ensure they get all the information directly from the source.

Today we can in fact guarantee fast response time and - since we are the manufacturer - more precise information to determine whether the product needs a simple firmware update, a hardware fix or a replacement.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

Since we manufacture all sorts of sources — from turntable to streamers — we usually to suggest a mix of genres and it’s really hard to narrow it down to just three tracks:

For classical, we love "Dance of the Tumblers" from the Snow Maiden by the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Eiji Oue (Reference Recordings,1998).

For electronic, our go to is "The Expert" by Yello (Polydor, 2021).

For jazz and vocals, it’s hard to pick between Cassandra Wilson’s "Strange Fruit" (Blue Note, 1995) and "Blues in My Heart” by Fiona Boyes (Reference Recordings, 2020).

What other products pair best with yours?

As a system manufacturer, we design our products to be part of a Gold Note system and therefore that’s the highest degree of synergy you can reach. The idea of designing full systems is generally frowned upon as the main objection inevitably is: if you design all sorts of products, how can you beat a specialist that only makes amplifiers?

The answer is somewhat counterintuitive and I believe it’s not fully understood by the public yet so I’ll briefly summarise it here — engineering audio systems is fundamentally to design ways to manage signals, whether digital or analogue. The knowledge compounds by researching all areas of signal transmission and amplification, and can then be used to improve on designing electronics, loudspeakers or tonearms.

For example: researching and designing a cable leads to gaining insights that can then be deployed when designing PCBs; R&D on phono stages where dealing with low voltage signals and ultra-low noise components will inform the design of amplifiers. This positive loop goes on affecting all areas and increasing the knowhow of the team, leading to better products.

  • VPI turntables utilize a multi-layered plinth construction, often combining acrylic, stainless steel, and MDF, to create a highly inert and resonance-controlled base.
  • They embrace 3D printing technology in their tonearm designs, allowing for complex shapes and optimized resonance control within a one-piece structure.
  • The brand provides a family-owned business experience, with readily available support and a direct connection to the designers, emphasizing long-term product viability and customer care.

Our interview with the brand

What are two key technological innovations or strong opinions that differ you from other brands?

Technologically, two standout innovations set VPI apart:

Our use of 3D printing technology and our proprietary 3-phase BLD motor and processing system. The 3D-printed tonearms represent a major leap forward in precision, damping, and performance—offering sonic benefits that traditional manufacturing struggles to match. Our 3-phase motor system, paired with advanced control processing, delivers superior speed stability and vibration isolation. Both are significant engineering achievements in turntable design and performance.

From a broader philosophy, what truly differentiates us is our identity—we're a family-owned company, still run by the original family, now heading into a third generation. Every table is made in America, built by a small but dedicated team, and reflects a hands-on, personal commitment to craftsmanship and legacy that's hard to find today.

What's your approach to customer support?

We always recommend that customers first reach out to their original retailer—dealer or distributor—as they are often the quickest path to help. However, if the dealer is unavailable or the issue goes beyond their scope, we're absolutely here and ready to jump in.

Customers can contact us directly by email or phone, and we do our best to respond as quickly as possible. What sets us apart is our commitment to hands-on support—if needed, we'll FaceTime or Zoom with customers to walk them through setup, troubleshooting, or fine-tuning. We've even invited customers to the factory when they're nearby. We take support personally because we take our customers personally—when you buy a VPI, you're part of the family.

What are your favorite tracks for showcasing the strength of your products?

  1. Take Five – Dave Brubeck: The rhythm, the horn work, and the overall layering make this an ideal track for evaluating instrumental balance and clarity. Personally, it holds a special place—it was a favorite of mine and my wife back when we were dating, and my father, Harry Weisfeld (VPI's founder), used it to teach me about soundstage and timing. It's both a sentimental and technical go-to.
  2. Dr. Ackbar – Bob and Ray's Stereo Spectacular: This is a wild, lesser-known gem. It's a spoken-word journey through a castle/laboratory that plays with spatial cues and stereo effects in a way that's perfect for system testing. When your setup is dialed in, you should feel like you're physically in the space—with voices and effects coming from pinpoint locations around you.
  3. 64 Dodge – Greg Brown: This track gives me everything I need when checking a system—vocals, guitar tone, and fine detail. I grew up listening to it, so I know exactly how it should sound. When something's off, I can hear it immediately; when it's right, this track just sings.

What other products pair best with yours?

Tough to pick just one, but Nordost cables are often paired with VPI by both customers and retail partners—and for good reason. The synergy between Nordost and our turntables brings out incredible detail and clarity. That said, two standout system pairings we've seen a lot this past year include:

System 1:

  • VPI Industries
  • VAC Amplifiers
  • Acora Speakers
  • Cardas Cables

System 2:

  • VPI Industries
  • Audio Research
  • Wilson Audio
  • Nordost Cables

Each of these combinations delivers a beautiful blend of musicality, precision, and dynamic range—exactly what analog lovers are chasing.

The turntables come in belt-drive and magnetic direct-drive versions, with a heated bearing on the belt-drive design and optional tube power supplies for the direct-drive ones, and the company makes its own tonearms and motors. Its phono stage mixes bipolar transistors with NOS Telefunken tubes and lets owners set gain and impedance separately for each input, so one unit can be matched to several cartridges. The streaming DAC has a digital module the owner can replace.

Acoustic Signature is a German turntable maker, founded in 1996. Founder Gunther Frohnhoefer presented its first high-mass turntable a year later, and the catalog now also covers tonearms, cartridges, phono preamplifiers and motor electronics. The company developed its own constrained-layer damping to reduce chassis resonance, the maintenance-free DuraTurn Diamond bearing and AVC Automatic Vibration Control for the motor. Every part is CNC-machined at its factory in Suessen and assembled by hand. The current models belong to the NEO series, and the company gives an extended warranty of 15 years on turntables and five on tonearms.

Kuzma is a Slovenian maker of turntables, tonearms and cartridges, founded by mechanical engineer Franc Kuzma. Its designs aim to mimic the way records are cut, using solid, non-resonant metals and acrylic shaped for rigidity and damping. The turntables go from a compact Stabi made of solid brass rods to an air-bearing flagship with a bronze platter. The 4Point tonearms use four unipivot bearings for stability and low friction. The VTA versions of the 12-inch Stogi arms fit a standard 9-inch arm position, so owners can use a longer arm on the same turntable.

Michell is a British turntable maker founded by engineer John Michell, who began by making parts for other record player brands. He later designed a suspended turntable with a floating pendulum sub-chassis and an inverted, oil-pumping main bearing that reduces friction and rumble. The bestselling deck is modular, so original units take every current upgrade. Smaller-footprint versions without the acrylic base and hinged lid suit tighter spaces, and Michell says they sound identical to the full-size decks. Everything is assembled by hand in Hertfordshire, and the range covers tonearms, moving coil cartridges and phono stages.
