Bowers & Wilkins
$2,501-$5,000

Bowers & Wilkins develops many of its own components in pursuit of a speaker that adds nothing to a recording and takes nothing away. The British company, founded in 1966 by John Bowers, pioneered Kevlar cones and developed the Matrix cabinet to cut resonance. The flagship Nautilus, built for dedicated listening rooms, uses tapered damping tubes to lower distortion. The 606 S3 and 603 S3 open the range with a Titanium Dome tweeter, and the 700 Series adds a Carbon Dome tweeter and Continuum cones. The Zeppelin is on our Best Wireless Speakers list.

KEF's idea is the Uni-Q driver, which puts the tweeter in the center of the woofer so every frequency leaves from the same point and the stereo image holds together. The British company, founded in 1961 by former BBC engineer Raymond Cooke, builds almost its whole range around it. Recent models add Metamaterial Absorption Technology, a maze-like structure that absorbs the sound coming off the back of the driver, and the LS50 Wireless II and LS60 Wireless put Uni-Q in a powered cabinet with streaming built in.

MartinLogan's idea is the CLS, or curvilinear line source, electrostatic panel, curved horizontally so high frequencies fan out across the room instead of beaming. The American company was started in Lawrence, Kansas, by Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland, whose middle names make up the brand. Its hybrid models pair the panel with powered woofers blended by DSP, and Anthem Room Correction can fit the bass to the room. Listeners who prefer cone speakers can choose the Motion series, built around Folded Motion tweeters.

  • The brand uniquely integrates powered dynamic woofers with its electrostatic panels, employing custom DSP engines and advanced crossover designs to achieve seamless blending and extended, well-defined bass response.
  • MartinLogan's commitment to full-range sound reproduction, even in smaller models, results in a "large" sound that defies the speaker's physical size, projecting height and scale often unmatched by comparably sized speakers.
  • They provide Anthem Room Correction (ARC) as an option, allowing users to tailor the bass response to their specific listening environment and achieve optimal integration between the speakers and the room's acoustics.

Klipsch's idea is the horn, built on its founder's rule that a more efficient speaker produces less distortion. Paul W. Klipsch started the American company in 1946 with the Klipschorn, and the Heritage models, from the Heresy IV to the Klipschorn AK6, are still hand built to order at his original factory in Hope, Arkansas. Their efficiency makes them a natural match for low-powered tube amplifiers, and the Heresy IV heads our Best Speakers for Tube Amps list. The Fives are powered speakers with a phono input, so a turntable plugs straight in.

Polk's idea is to carry technology from its flagship speakers down into affordable ones. The American company was started in Baltimore in 1972 by Matthew Polk, Sandy Gross and George Klopfer, and it still engineers its speakers there. Its signature technology is SDA, or Stereo Dimensional Array, which addresses the crosstalk between the ears that narrows a stereo image, and the Legend L800 uses it.
